Cream Chargers: The Complete Guide (How to Use, How Many, Best Brands & Prices)
Cream chargers are the fastest way to make fresh, stable whipped cream at home or behind a busy counter. This guide covers everything people search for before buying: what cream chargers are, how to use them, how many you need, which brands and pack sizes give the best value, how they compare with N2O tanks, and how to buy them safely and legally in the UK, Ireland, the USA and Canada.
What are cream chargers?
A cream charger, sometimes called a whipped cream charger, N2O charger, cream whipper cartridge or nitrous oxide canister, is a small steel cylinder that holds 8g of pressurised nitrous oxide (N2O). Food-grade N2O is the approved food additive E942. It is used because it dissolves readily into fat, so when you release cream from a dispenser the gas expands and turns liquid cream into soft, airy whipped cream in seconds.
Compared with whisking by hand or using an aerosol can, chargers give you real cream with no added propellant taste, a consistent texture every time, and less waste, because whatever you don’t use stays sealed in the fridge.

How to use cream chargers (step by step)
- Chill everything. Use cold cream straight from the fridge. A chilled dispenser helps too.
- Fill the dispenser. Pour in cream with 30% fat or more, plus sugar or flavouring if you like. Stay below the max fill line, usually half to two-thirds of the bottle.
- Screw the head on tightly and make sure the silicone washer is seated, so no gas escapes.
- Load the charger. Put an 8g charger in the charger holder and screw it on until you hear a short hiss. That is the gas entering the bottle.
- Shake. Turn the dispenser upside down and shake it firmly 4–6 times for a 0.5 L bottle. Too much shaking makes the cream stiff.
- Dispense. Hold the dispenser upside down, nozzle pointing straight down, and press the lever gently.
- Store or clean. Keep the sealed dispenser in the fridge, or release the remaining gas fully before unscrewing the head to clean it.
How many cream chargers do you need?
| Dispenser size | Chargers per fill | Typical yield | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 L (half pint) | 1 | Small desserts and hot drinks for 2–4 people | Home use, coffee bars |
| 0.5 L (1 pint) | 1 | Desserts for a family, or a café rush | The most popular size |
| 1 L (1 quart) | 2 | Parties, brunch service, pastry sections | Restaurants and caterers |
As a rule of thumb, a café filling a 0.5 L dispenser three times a day uses about 21 chargers a week, so a 24 pack lasts roughly a week and a 600 case lasts most of a season. Our full guide on how many cream chargers you need includes weekly and monthly usage tables.
Best cream chargers: brands compared
All standard 8g chargers fit all standard dispensers. The real differences are gas purity, how consistent the fill is, build quality and price per charger.
| Brand | Known for | Pack sizes at MOSA |
|---|---|---|
| MOSA | Established culinary-gas manufacturer; recyclable steel cylinders | 24 to 240, plus wholesale cases of 600–2,400 |
| MOSA Pro | The professional line, for higher-volume kitchens | 24 to 240 |
| Liss | Popular European brand with good value in bulk | 24 to 240, plus wholesale cases |
| iSi | Premium brand favoured by many chefs | 24 to 240, plus wholesale cases |
| AMOR | Budget-friendly everyday chargers | 24 to 240 |
Avoid very cheap unbranded chargers. Poorly filtered gas can leave an oily residue that clogs dispenser valves and affects flavour, and under-filled chargers waste cream. See our best cream chargers buyer’s guide for a deeper comparison.

Choosing a whipped cream dispenser

- Material: food-grade 304 stainless steel lasts longest and is the choice for commercial kitchens. Anodised aluminium is lighter and cheaper, which suits home use.
- Size: 0.5 L suits most homes and cafés; 1 L suits restaurants and events; 0.25 L suits coffee bars and small households.
- Nozzles: a decoration nozzle set gives you stars, tulips and straight piping, and an injector lets you fill pastries.
- Spares: keep a spare silicone washer. A worn seal is the number-one cause of leaks.

Cream chargers vs N2O tanks
| 8g cream chargers | N2O tanks (580–700g) | |
|---|---|---|
| Equivalent chargers | 1 per cartridge | A 640g tank holds as much gas as 80 chargers |
| Extra kit needed | None | A pressure regulator and hose |
| Speed | One charger at a time | Fast refills, ideal for long services |
| Waste | Many small steel cylinders | One larger cylinder |
| Delivery | UK, Ireland, EU, USA, Canada | UK only, max 2 per consumer order |

Nitro cold brew chargers
Nitro coffee uses nitrogen (N2) rather than nitrous oxide. MOSA 2g nitro cold brew chargers infuse cold brew with tiny bubbles for a creamy body and a cascading pour, with no keg or tap system needed. They suit coffee shops testing nitro on the menu, and home baristas.

Safety, storage and the law
- Food use only. Cream chargers are for preparing food and drink. Never inhale nitrous oxide.
- Storage: keep chargers somewhere cool and dry, below 50°C (122°F), out of direct sun and away from children.
- Handling: never puncture, heat or modify a charger. Use only with a compatible dispenser.
- Disposal: recycle empty steel chargers where your local rules allow. Never put full or partly used chargers in household waste.
- The law: in the UK, nitrous oxide has been a Class C drug since November 2023, but supplying and buying it for legitimate uses such as catering is lawful. Rules vary elsewhere: for example, New York requires buyers to be 21+. Every MOSA order is 18+ (21+ in New York), with a date-of-birth check and a culinary-use declaration at checkout.

Cream charger FAQs
What are cream chargers?
Cream chargers are small steel cylinders filled with 8g of food-grade nitrous oxide (E942). Screwed into a whipped cream dispenser, the gas dissolves into cream and makes it light and airy the moment you press the lever.
How many cream chargers do I need per dispenser?
Use one 8g charger for a 0.5 L (1 pint) dispenser and two for a 1 L (1 quart) dispenser. Thicker mixtures such as mousses or espumas may need one extra charger.
How long does whipped cream last in a dispenser?
Kept sealed in the fridge, cream in a clean dispenser usually keeps for several days, often up to around 10, as long as you stay within the cream's own use-by date.
What cream works best in a cream charger dispenser?
Use cream with at least 30% fat, such as UK double or whipping cream or US heavy cream. Chill it well and fill no higher than the dispenser's max line.
Are cream chargers legal to buy?
Yes, for food and drink preparation by adults. In the UK nitrous oxide is a Class C drug, but buying it for legitimate uses such as whipping cream is lawful. MOSA sells to over-18s only, and every order includes a culinary-use declaration.
Are N2O tanks better than 8g cream chargers?
Tanks are cheaper per gram and faster for very busy kitchens, but need a pressure regulator. 8g chargers are simpler, more portable and better for homes and lower-volume venues.
Can I recycle empty cream chargers?
Empty steel chargers can usually go in metal recycling where your local rules allow. Never put full or partly used chargers in household waste.
