How Many Cream Chargers Do I Need? Whipper Sizes, Batches and Pack Sizes

Working out how many cream chargers to buy depends on the size of your whipper and how often you use it. Use this guide to estimate what you need and pick a pack that saves money without leaving you short.

Chargers per whipper size

  • 0.25 L (half pint) whipper: 1 x 8g charger.
  • 0.5 L (1 pint) whipper: 1 x 8g charger.
  • 1 L (1 quart) whipper: 2 x 8g chargers.

These are typical guidelines for whipped cream. Always follow your whipper maker’s instructions and never fill past the maximum line. Richer espumas or thicker mixtures may need an extra charger, but never exceed the maker’s limit.

How many cream chargers per week?

Multiply the number of batches you make by the chargers each batch needs:

  • Occasional home use (1 to 2 batches a week in a 0.5 L whipper): about 4 to 8 chargers a month, so a 24-pack lasts a few months.
  • Keen baker or small café (1 to 2 batches a day): 30 to 60 chargers a month. A 48 or 96-pack is the sweet spot.
  • Busy café, bar or restaurant (several 1 L batches a day): 200+ chargers a month. Choose 144 to 240 packs, or switch to an N2O tank.
  • Caterers and multi-site venues: 600+ chargers a month. Our wholesale cases give the lowest price per charger.

Which pack size should I buy?

Bigger packs cost less per charger, and chargers keep for a long time if stored in a cool, dry place. If you use more than one box of 24 a month, moving up a pack size usually saves money and reorders.

Tips to get more from every charger

  • Chill your cream and your whipper before charging.
  • Use cream with at least 30% fat for stable whipped cream.
  • Shake 4 to 6 times after charging; over-shaking makes cream grainy.
  • Keep the head seal clean and replace worn silicone washers to stop gas leaking.
